Ursula Burke called Hope for a Better Future

This exhibition at the Mac in Belfast I have previously mentioned in a post about the class trip however to give it a proper reflection it deserves a post of it’s own. A lot of the work seems classical at first and then upon close investigation you can see reflections of references to the socio economic climate of N.Ireland. such as with the Venus de Milo style ceramic with the red hand of ulster on its back as well as the man in a balaclava on the sofa. While the balaclava gives this work a certain edge, suggesting a potentially more sinister meaning to this figure it is in juxtaposition to his reclined position on the sofa, games console controller in his hands and the tattoo on his arm declaring his love for his mother.
